Sri Vijaya Puram, July 29: The Andaman and Nicobar Administration is set to organise a guided rainforest birding programme at Chidiyatapu as part of its Tourism Fairs, Festivals and Events Calendar 2026–27, aiming to promote eco-tourism while raising public awareness about the islands’ unique avian diversity and rainforest ecosystem. The initiative seeks to encourage responsible nature-based tourism by connecting participants with one of the Union Territory’s key biodiversity hotspots.
The ‘Rainforest Birding Trail’ will be held at the Biological Park, Chidiyatapu, on August 1 from 8 am onwards. The event is being organised by the Directorate of Information, Publicity and Tourism in collaboration with the Department of Environment and Forests and the Avian Club.
According to the organisers, the programme is designed to highlight the ecological significance of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands by offering participants an opportunity to observe birdlife within the islands’ rainforest habitat. The guided trail will be led by experienced resource persons and birding experts, who will provide information on the region’s endemic and migratory bird species as well as the importance of conserving biodiversity.
The initiative forms part of the Tourism Fairs, Festivals and Events Calendar 2026–27 launched by the Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Through events centred on nature and wildlife, the Administration aims to strengthen eco-tourism while promoting greater public appreciation of the islands’ natural heritage.
The Directorate has invited a wide range of participants, including nature enthusiasts, bird watchers, students, photographers, travel agents, eco-tourism stakeholders and members of the general public, to take part in the event. The programme is intended to provide participants with an opportunity to explore one of the islands’ well-known birding destinations while learning about the ecological value of its rainforest ecosystem.
Interested participants have been asked to register in advance with the Directorate of Information, Publicity and Tourism. Participation will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to the availability of seats.
The Directorate has encouraged nature lovers and eco-tourism enthusiasts to participate in the birding trail, stating that the programme seeks to promote responsible tourism practices while increasing awareness about the conservation of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ biodiversity. The event also aims to strengthen public engagement with the islands’ natural environment through guided outdoor learning experiences.
