Police, Fire Officers From Islands Earn National Service Medals

Four officers from the Andaman and Nicobar Police and Fire and Emergency Services have been conferred national medals for meritorious service on the occasion of the 77th Republic Day, with the honours announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs in recognition of long, distinguished and unblemished service records.

The awardees include personnel from operational policing, training, investigation and fire services, reflecting a cross-section of roles within the islands’ internal security and emergency response framework. Three officers have been awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service, while one officer from the Fire and Emergency Services has received the Fire Service Medal for Meritorious Service.

Deputy Commandant Naveen Kumar of the India Reserve Battalion, Andaman and Nicobar Police, is among those honoured. Having joined the force in June 2006 as a Sub-Inspector (General Duty), he has served in multiple operational and training capacities over nearly two decades. His service record includes advanced professional training at national-level institutions such as the BSF Training Academy in Tekanpur, STC BSF Churachandpur for counter-insurgency and jungle warfare, and the Central School of Weapons and Tactics in Indore, where he secured top rank among All-India Police trainees. Over the years, he has been associated with training, security management and modernization initiatives, including systems related to inventory and health management within the force.

Sub-Inspector Amar Kumar Roy, serving as Station Officer in Diglipur under the Andaman and Nicobar Fire and Emergency Services, has been recognised with the Fire Service Medal for Meritorious Service. He joined the department in June 1988 as a Constable (Fireman) and rose through the ranks over more than three decades of service. His career progression includes roles as Leading Fireman, Assistant Sub-Inspector and Sub-Inspector. Under his leadership, the Fire Station at Diglipur was adjudged Best Fire Station in North and Middle Andaman district for 2025. His service record includes multiple commendation certificates and cash rewards, along with a Deputy Commissioner’s Commendation Certificate awarded on Republic Day 2025.

Head Constable S. Ramani, who joined the Andaman and Nicobar Police as a constable in 1994, has also been awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service. After completing basic training at the Recruit Training Centre in Sri Vijaya Puram, he served in Police Lines, the Police Motor Transport Unit and various police stations including Campbell Bay and Nancowry. His contributions include involvement in the conduct of Passing Out Parades, Republic Day and Independence Day parades, and participation in sports and inter-unit competitions. His role in training environments has been associated with discipline and professionalism among recruits, and he has received several commendation certificates during his career.

Another recipient, Head Constable Ibrahim Ali, has been recognised with the Police Medal for Meritorious Service for a service record that spans central armed police forces and the islands’ police. He initially joined the Indo-Tibetan Border Police in 1994 and served in areas including Anantnag, Doda, Leh-Ladakh and the Punjab-Haryana Secretariat, participating in counter-terror operations. After joining the Andaman and Nicobar Police in 2002, he served in District Jail Prothrapur, the CID unit and Police Station Aberdeen. His assignments have included investigation and detection of cases under narcotics laws, illegal timber trade, excise violations and immoral trafficking. During the Covid-19 pandemic, he remained deployed for enforcement duties, transport of patients and deceased persons, and related investigations, including handling of unclaimed bodies under due permissions.

Senior leadership of the Andaman and Nicobar Police has conveyed congratulations to the awardees, noting that the distinctions bring recognition to the services in the islands. The medals are part of the Republic Day honours that acknowledge sustained performance, professional commitment and service conduct across police and emergency service organisations in the country.
