Awareness, education, and empowerment mark island events this week

Date:

The Andaman & Nicobar Islands are witnessing a surge of community-centric initiatives this week, blending social awareness, education, and entrepreneurship into a series of participatory local events. From welfare registration drives to creative outreach and women-led enterprises, multiple programmes are uniting local residents under shared goals of inclusion and empowerment.

The A&N Islands Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board, in collaboration with the Beodnabad Gram Panchayat, has announced an Awareness-cum-Registration Camp for construction workers on October 18. The event, to be held at the Beodnabad Gram Panchayat premises, aims to inform daily wage earners about various social security and welfare schemes run by the Board. Workers attending the camp will be able to register on the spot to avail benefits related to insurance, health, pensions, and family assistance. Officials stated that the initiative is designed to bring more construction workers under formal protection mechanisms and ensure that unorganized labourers are aware of their legal entitlements. Local workers have been encouraged to participate and make use of the facility.

In the education sector, the Tagore Government College of Education (TGCE) continued its five-day annual community living camp for Undergraduate Education (UGED) teacher trainees (Batch 2023–27), with the second day focusing on “Community Outreach and Social Awareness.” Organized under the national initiatives of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, and the Red Ribbon Club, the event brought together 103 teacher trainees in socially driven performances and awareness activities.

As part of the outreach, trainees performed Nukkad Nataks (street plays) at GSSS School Line, GSSS Tushnabad, and GSSS Manglutan, addressing critical themes like HIV/AIDS prevention, cyber fraud awareness, and drug and substance abuse prevention. The interactive performances aimed to sensitize school students and local communities about the importance of health, digital responsibility, and staying vigilant against addiction. The effort was well received as a demonstration of how education can actively connect with social realities beyond classrooms, fostering civic responsibility among trainee teachers.

Meanwhile, the spirit of Deepawali is bringing yet another community-focused celebration to the islands with a Self-Help Group (SHG) Mela scheduled for October 16–17 at Marina Park, organized by the Andaman & Nicobar Islands Rural Livelihood Mission (ANIRLM) under the Directorate of Rural Development. The event, open from 3 PM to 9 PM, will showcase a diverse range of handmade local products, including traditional décor, handicrafts, festive items, and homemade delicacies crafted by local women’s groups.

The SHG Mela aims to highlight the growing role of women entrepreneurs in rural economic development by providing them with an accessible marketplace. Visitors ,  both residents and tourists ,  will have the chance to explore unique products while directly supporting the self-reliant livelihoods of local artisans. Organizers said the event underscores the Administration’s broader goal of linking local craftsmanship with sustainable tourism and inclusive growth.

Across all three initiatives, a shared focus on grassroots engagement has been evident ,  whether through the empowerment of construction workers, social education by teacher trainees, or entrepreneurial platforms for women-led groups. Each event contributes to strengthening the social fabric of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, emphasizing collaboration between government agencies, educational institutions, and local communities.

With awareness programmes continuing across the districts and community-led activities gaining momentum, the islands are positioning themselves as a model for participatory governance and social development. As the week progresses, these locally-driven initiatives are expected to create wider ripples of inclusion, education, and empowerment across the Union Territory.
