Sri Vijaya Puram, May 30: The Andaman and Nicobar Islands Administration has advanced plans to expand underwater tourism infrastructure by exploring new dive sites, artificial reefs and marine-themed attractions across several islands, as part of efforts to strengthen the Union Territory’s position as a global scuba diving destination.
The proposal was presented before Admiral D K Joshi, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, NM, VSM (Retd.), Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Vice-Chairman of the Islands Development Agency, during a meeting focused on the future development of diving tourism in the archipelago.
The presentation examined opportunities for identifying and developing new dive locations and underwater attractions at multiple sites across the Islands. Locations discussed included North Bay, Swaraj Dweep, Shaheed Dweep, Long Island and Aves Island, among others.

Officials also deliberated on the development of artificial reefs, shipwreck dive experiences and marine-themed underwater installations. The proposed initiatives are aimed at diversifying tourism offerings while creating additional attractions for recreational and adventure divers visiting the Islands.
According to the presentation, the planned interventions are expected to support sustainable tourism development by reducing pressure on existing natural reef systems and promoting alternative underwater attractions. The proposals also seek to contribute to coral restoration efforts through artificial reef development and other marine conservation-oriented measures.
The initiatives form part of a broader effort to enhance the Islands’ appeal within the international diving community and increase their visibility on the global scuba tourism map. By expanding the range of dive experiences available across different locations, the Administration aims to further strengthen the sector’s long-term growth potential.
Chief Secretary of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration, senior officers of the Administration and representatives from the local diving industry attended the presentation and discussions.
The deliberations focused on balancing tourism development with marine conservation objectives while identifying opportunities to expand underwater tourism infrastructure across the Islands.
