Sri Vijaya Puram, July 9: Strengthening awareness of workplace safety and the legal safeguards against sexual harassment, the Department of Arts & Culture of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration on Wednesday organised a sensitisation and capacity-building programme on the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act for government employees.
The programme was held in the Conference Hall of the Disaster Management Department and brought together officers and staff from the Departments of Arts & Culture, Tribal Welfare, Andaman Adim Janjati Vikas Samiti (AAJVS) and Disaster Management. The initiative focused on improving awareness of the legal framework governing the prevention of sexual harassment at workplaces and promoting its effective implementation in government offices.
Director of Arts & Culture Priyanka Kumari inaugurated the programme and underlined the importance of the POSH Act in ensuring safe, respectful and inclusive workplaces. She said awareness, sensitivity and collective responsibility are essential for preventing sexual harassment at the workplace and fostering an environment based on dignity and equality.
The technical session was conducted by POSH Master Trainer Rubina Siddiqui, who delivered a detailed presentation on the provisions of the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act. The session covered the legal framework and practical aspects of implementing the law in workplace settings.
Through interactive discussions and practical examples, participants were encouraged to contribute towards creating safe and gender-sensitive workplaces. The session also provided an opportunity for employees to understand their responsibilities and the mechanisms available under the Act.
Officers and staff from the participating departments actively interacted with the resource person and sought clarification on various aspects related to the implementation of the POSH Act in government offices. The discussions focused on improving awareness and strengthening institutional understanding of workplace safety provisions.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Assistant Director of Arts & Culture Kanak Radha Chatterjee.
The capacity-building programme forms part of the Administration’s efforts to enhance awareness of workplace safety and promote effective implementation of the Prevention of Sexual Harassment Act across government institutions.
