Sri Vijaya Puram, May 13: Timely intervention by a police personnel from PS Aberdeen prevented a minor girl from allegedly attempting suicide at Corbyn’s Cove Beach after she was found sitting alone in a distressed condition near the seashore.
The incident took place on May 11 when HC(SG) Basanti Mistry of PS Aberdeen was deployed on duty at Corbyn’s Cove Beach, one of the busiest tourist and public locations in the city.
According to police, the officer noticed a minor girl sitting alone by the shoreline and observed signs of emotional distress. Sensing that something was wrong, the police personnel approached the girl and initiated a conversation to understand her condition.

During the interaction, the girl was reportedly found to be under severe mental stress and emotional trauma. Police said she also expressed suicidal thoughts and intentions to end her life.
Recognising the seriousness of the situation, HC(SG) Basanti Mistry immediately intervened and safely brought the girl to Aberdeen Police Station for counselling and support.
Officials stated that the girl was later counselled at the police station, during which she reportedly shared details of incidents that had caused her emotional distress.
Based on the information provided during counselling, police said necessary legal action has been initiated in connection with the matter.
The incident highlighted the importance of alert policing and human intervention in public spaces, particularly in situations involving mental health distress among children and young individuals.
Corbyn’s Cove Beach, being one of the most frequented public locations in Sri Vijaya Puram, witnesses regular deployment of police personnel for public safety, crowd management and tourist assistance. Police officials said the timely observation and compassionate handling of the situation by the officer helped prevent a possible tragedy.

Authorities described the intervention as an example of sympathetic and community-oriented policing, especially in cases involving women and children facing emotional or psychological distress.
The Andaman and Nicobar Police stated that the actions of HC(SG) Basanti Mistry reflected the force’s commitment towards safeguarding vulnerable individuals and strengthening public trust through responsive policing.
Mental health concerns among adolescents and young adults have increasingly become an area of concern across the country, with experts repeatedly stressing the need for early intervention, emotional support systems and accessible counselling services.
Police also urged people facing emotional distress, anxiety, depression or suicidal thoughts to seek professional help and counselling support rather than suffering in silence.
Officials informed that individuals in distress can access mental health assistance through the Tele-MANAS platform by calling the national helpline number 14416.
The service provides counselling support, video and audio consultations and early intervention assistance for stress, anxiety and depression in multiple regional languages.
Authorities said the platform has been designed to improve access to mental healthcare services and encourage individuals to seek timely help during emotional crises.
The incident at Corbyn’s Cove once again underlined how immediate human response and public vigilance can play a critical role in preventing self-harm and ensuring timely support for vulnerable individuals in distress.
If you or someone you know is struggling emotionally, support is available through Tele-MANAS helpline 14416 and local counselling services.
