Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 9: Farmers on Swaraj Dweep are set to receive fertilisers and other agricultural inputs for the upcoming Rabi season, with the Andaman and Nicobar Administration dispatching an initial consignment of more than 0.9 metric tonnes of DAP and urea, along with equipment and other farm inputs, on October 8.
The Department of Agriculture sent the consignment from MV Wandoor for transportation to the island, where timely access to essential nutrients and supplies is important for seasonal cultivation. The shipment includes 0.50 metric tonnes of di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) and 0.45 metric tonnes of NC Urea, besides sprayers, traps, Nano DAP and Nano Urea.
The supply is intended to meet farmers’ requirements during the Rabi crop season and maintain the availability of agricultural inputs through the department’s designated distribution system.
Fertiliser availability is expected to support balanced nutrient application and the adoption of Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) practices. These practices aim to maintain soil health and improve agricultural productivity. The department has particularly highlighted vegetable cultivation, an important component of farming on Swaraj Dweep, as an area that requires access to appropriate nutrients and inputs.
The Agriculture Department is monitoring the consignment’s movement, availability and distribution to ensure the supplies reach farmers on time. The department will assess further requirements according to demand and the availability of inputs, and arrange additional consignments as needed throughout the Rabi season.
The latest dispatch marks the start of the department’s supply effort for the island’s seasonal agricultural needs. Further supplies will depend on the requirements identified during the season, with the department seeking to ensure adequate availability for farmers.
The consignment combines conventional fertilisers with nano-fertiliser products and other agricultural equipment, giving farmers access to a range of inputs for crop management. Sprayers and traps are included alongside the fertilisers in the shipment.
The department has not specified a delivery date for the consignment or the quantity of any subsequent supplies. It has said it will organise additional inputs based on farmers’ requirements and availability during the crop season.
