Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 22: Fourteen farmers in Chota Enaka, Kamorta, received training in scientific pig farming practices under the National Livestock Mission (NLM), with the programme focusing on improving pig production, farm management and household income.
The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services conducted the awareness training programme to familiarise farmers with methods for more systematic livestock rearing. The session covered essential aspects of pig farming, including suitable housing, balanced feeding, breeding management, hygiene and disease prevention.
The training also addressed overall farm management, providing farmers with basic knowledge intended to support better production practices. The programme placed particular emphasis on maintaining hygiene and preventing diseases as part of routine pig-rearing management.
Another key component was the value addition of pork products. Farmers were introduced to products such as bacon, ham and sausage as potential avenues for enhancing income from pig farming.
Addressing the participants as chief guest, Mosses, 1st Captain, urged the farmers to engage actively with the training and apply the knowledge gained to their pig-rearing activities. The emphasis was on using the practices discussed during the programme to improve production and contribute to household earnings.
The training concluded with a positive response from participating farmers, who expressed keen interest in adopting scientific livestock-rearing methods. Their response reflected an interest in applying the practices covered during the session to improve production and support sustainable livelihoods.
The programme brought together practical guidance on animal husbandry, farm hygiene, breeding, feeding, disease prevention and product processing, giving participating farmers a broader understanding of scientific pig farming and opportunities for value addition.
