Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 18: Cleanliness drives were held at beaches and 30 other locations across North and Middle Andaman on September 17 as part of the Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2026 campaign, with government departments, panchayats, educational institutions and local communities participating in waste removal and sanitation activities.
The district-level beach drives covered Karmatang, Raman Bagicha, Baludera and Ramnagar beaches under the aegis of the District Administration, North and Middle Andaman. Officials and staff from various line departments, representatives of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), and students from schools and colleges took part in the activities.
Participants collected and removed litter and waste from the beach premises and adjoining areas as part of efforts to maintain cleaner public spaces and promote greater awareness of cleanliness, hygiene and environmental responsibility.
The drives also included administration of the Swachhata Pledge to participants, reinforcing the campaign’s focus on individual and community responsibility towards cleanliness.
Beyond the beach locations, Gram Panchayats and line departments organised similar cleanliness activities at 30 other sites across the district. Local residents, students, youth, PRI representatives and other members of the community participated in these programmes.
The district-wide activities brought together government agencies and community institutions as part of the ongoing SHS campaign, with the participation extending beyond administrative bodies to schools, colleges, panchayats and residents.
The District Administration, North and Middle Andaman, has appealed to residents to continue participating in cleanliness initiatives and maintain the campaign’s spirit beyond the SHS period.
It urged people to adopt responsible waste-management practices and keep their surroundings clean as part of their daily lives.
The campaign’s activities come against the backdrop of the need for sustained public participation in maintaining public and community spaces. The administration has emphasised that cleanliness efforts should continue beyond organised drives and become part of routine practices.
The SHS 2026 activities in North and Middle Andaman therefore combined on-ground sanitation work with public participation, covering beaches as well as multiple community locations across the district.
The administration called on residents to contribute to these efforts through responsible handling of waste and by maintaining cleanliness in their immediate surroundings after the campaign activities conclude.
