Sri Vijaya Puram, November 4: Two persons have been arrested in connection with the death of a man found with visible injuries at Neya Katai in Radha Nagar, North Andaman, with Diglipur Police detecting the case and apprehending the suspects within a day of receiving information about the incident.
The deceased, identified as Ritesh Ekka, was found lying unconscious with injuries on his body on the night of November 2. Following information about the incident, a police team from Diglipur Police Station rushed to the location and shifted him to the Primary Health Centre (PHC) at Radhanagar. However, the attending doctor declared him brought dead.
Police subsequently registered a case, Crime No. 84/26, dated November 3, under Sections 103 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, dealing with murder and acts committed by several persons in furtherance of their common intention.
During the investigation, police established the alleged involvement of two persons, both residents of Neya Katai, Radha Nagar. Acting on the findings, the two were arrested. They are scheduled to be produced before the competent court on November 4.
While the arrests mark a significant development in the investigation, several details surrounding the incident remain unclear. The circumstances leading to Ekka’s death, the nature of the injuries, the alleged motive and the sequence of events preceding the incident have not been disclosed by the police. Investigators are continuing their probe to establish the complete circumstances surrounding the death.
The case comes amid a series of separate murder investigations reported across the islands in recent months, bringing renewed attention to the investigative challenges faced by police in establishing the circumstances behind violent deaths.
In an earlier case reported by The Wave Andaman, the body of 37-year-old Julius Kerketta, also known as Vinod, was found on October 2 near Tsunami Shelter-1 at Brookshabad. He had reportedly left his home a day earlier. The initial investigation followed concerns raised by his family after injuries were noticed on his hands and legs. Pahargaon Police subsequently identified a woman as the prime suspect within 24 hours, using call detail records, CCTV footage, witness accounts, forensic evidence and other circumstantial findings. The investigation had also involved crime-scene reconstruction as police worked to establish the sequence of events.
Another separate murder case was reported from Campbell Bay in July, when 38-year-old Kartik Mondal was found with facial injuries near the Fish Landing Jetty on July 11. Police arrested Guman Samad in connection with the case, alleging that an argument had preceded an assault with an iron rod. The suspected weapon was also reportedly recovered during the investigation.
These incidents are separate cases and have no established connection with the Neya Katai investigation. However, they underline the importance of establishing the sequence of events, examining physical and forensic evidence and corroborating statements before drawing conclusions in cases involving suspicious deaths.
In the present case, the prompt registration of the FIR and arrest of the two suspects indicate that investigators have made initial progress. However, the circumstances surrounding Ekka’s death will have to be established through further investigation and evidence presented before the court. The arrest of the accused does not by itself establish their guilt.
The police have credited the swift response, dedication and professional commitment of the Diglipur Police team for the prompt detection of the case and apprehension of the suspects.
Further investigation is underway to ascertain all facts and circumstances surrounding the incident.
