Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 7: Two separate drug cases were registered in North and Middle Andaman after about 104 grams of suspected ganja was recovered from a person near Subashgram and four suspected cannabis plants were found growing behind a house in Sagar Dweep on September 5.
In the Subashgram case, a person was intercepted near the area and approximately 104 grams of suspected ganja was allegedly recovered from his possession. The accused was arrested and a case was registered at Police Station Diglipur under the relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
The second case concerns the alleged cultivation of cannabis plants behind a house at Ward No. 01, Sagar Dweep. Police recovered four suspected cannabis plants from the premises and registered a case against 68-year-old Juren Das under Section 20(a)(i) of the NDPS Act, 1985.
The plants were recovered at around 5 pm during a search conducted by a team led by Sub-Inspector Mohd. Rafique, In-Charge of Police Station Diglipur, following specific information about their alleged cultivation behind the house.
Police said the plants were slightly withered and measured between 70 centimetres and 1.20 metres in height, including the roots. Their combined weight was approximately 75 grams.
The plants were examined in the presence of independent witnesses before being uprooted and seized. They were packed in a transparent polythene cover and sealed at the spot in the presence of the witnesses and the accused. The seizure proceedings were photographed and videographed through the e-Sakshya Mobile Application.
According to the police case, Das allegedly admitted to cultivating the plants. The seized material was subsequently deposited in the Police Malkhana at Police Station Diglipur.
Both accused were arrested in connection with the respective cases, and separate cases were registered at Police Station Diglipur under the applicable provisions of the NDPS Act.
Further investigation is underway in both cases to establish the circumstances surrounding the recoveries, trace the source of the suspected contraband and determine whether other persons were involved.
