Sri Vijaya Puram, July 28: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced that it will contest the 2027 Panchayat and Municipal elections in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, outlining plans to strengthen its organisational presence while focusing on civic infrastructure, healthcare, education and grassroots governance. The announcement signals the party’s intention to expand its political footprint in the Union Territory by engaging with local issues and fielding candidates in the upcoming local body polls.
The announcement was made during a media interaction in Sri Vijaya Puram, where AAP Team Leader Dr. Malik said the party’s primary objective is to address long-standing civic concerns and strengthen governance at the grassroots level. The party stated that it intends to work on issues affecting residents while increasing public participation in the democratic process.
During the interaction, party representatives highlighted several civic challenges faced by Islanders, including electricity supply, water availability, road connectivity and other public infrastructure issues. According to the party, these concerns continue to affect the daily lives of residents, and it intends to work with local officials and the Andaman and Nicobar Administration to identify practical solutions.
Dr. Malik said the decision to join the Aam Aadmi Party was taken after discussions with the party leadership. He expressed confidence in the party’s approach to addressing public grievances and said efforts are underway to expand the organisation’s presence across the Islands.
The party also announced that it has constituted its state team and is strengthening its organisational structure in the Union Territory. As part of this expansion, an AAP office is expected to be established in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, after which members of the public will be invited following its inauguration.
Speaking about the 2027 Panchayat and Municipal elections, party representatives said AAP plans to field educated, dedicated and honest candidates for local body polls. The party said it aims to promote transparent governance, strengthen grassroots leadership and encourage greater public participation in local democratic institutions.
During the media interaction, the representative also alleged that money and influence play a role during elections and called for greater public awareness against corruption and injustice. The party said its immediate political priority is to prepare for the 2027 local body elections while creating awareness among Islanders, rather than discussing plans for future electoral contests.
Responding to questions from journalists, the representative said that although the party does not currently hold executive authority in the Union Territory, it intends to engage constructively with the Andaman and Nicobar Administration by raising practical issues affecting the public. According to the party, awareness campaigns on public issues will continue in the coming months.
The party identified health and education as the two sectors requiring the highest priority in the Islands. It reiterated its commitment to raising public concerns through democratic and constitutional means while continuing to engage with the Administration on issues affecting the people of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
