Andaman Veterinary Team Carries Out Disease Screening at Calicut Gaushala

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, July 28: The Andaman and Nicobar Administration’s Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS) conducted a comprehensive veterinary health camp at Annapurna Gaushala in Calicut, undertaking disease screening, preventive healthcare and nutritional support measures aimed at improving the health and welfare of cattle housed at the facility.

The camp was organised on July 25 by the Senior Veterinary Officer of Veterinary Hospital Garacharma along with the department’s veterinary team. During the exercise, officials carried out systematic health monitoring of the animals to assess their overall condition and identify any potential health concerns through laboratory-based diagnostic testing.

As part of the health assessment, veterinarians collected 23 blood samples and 22 dung samples from the animals. The samples were sent to the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (ADDL), Dollygunj, for detailed laboratory examination.

According to the department, the laboratory analysis includes testing for blood protozoa, blood parasites, Complete Blood Count (CBC), Renal Function Test (RFT), Liver Function Test (LFT) and serum electrolytes. These examinations are intended to evaluate the overall health status of the animals through comprehensive diagnostic screening.

The veterinary team also carried out identification and record management measures during the camp. One damaged ear tag was replaced with a new tag, while two newly inducted animals were tagged to ensure proper identification and maintain updated livestock records.

Preventive healthcare formed another key component of the programme. A total of 24 animals were dewormed as part of routine disease prevention measures. The department also supplied feed supplements, including Profeed and liquid Phytocal Ruchi, to support the animals’ nutritional requirements and improve their general health condition.

Veterinary officials additionally provided guidance to the caretaker of the gaushala on scientific feeding practices designed to promote better animal health and welfare. The advisory focused on maintaining a balanced diet by ensuring the appropriate supply of green fodder, dry matter, concentrate feed and adequate clean drinking water.

Officials emphasised that proper nutrition is essential for maintaining the health, productivity and overall welfare of livestock. The recommendations were aimed at helping improve routine management practices at the gaushala through scientifically planned feeding and care.

The veterinary health camp formed part of the department’s continued efforts to monitor livestock health, strengthen disease surveillance and encourage scientific animal husbandry practices through preventive care, diagnostic testing and technical guidance.
