Canine Distemper Cases Surface in Andaman, Administration Issues Dog Health Alert

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, June 25: The emergence of Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) infections in dogs in and around Sri Vijaya Puram has prompted the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration to issue a public advisory, urging pet owners to take immediate preventive measures as the potentially fatal disease continues to affect dogs in the region.

According to the Department, cases of Canine Distemper Virus infection have been observed over the past couple of weeks. The disease is described as highly contagious and life-threatening, particularly among unvaccinated or inadequately vaccinated dogs.

Authorities said the viral infection poses a significant animal health concern as it affects multiple body systems, including the respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous systems of both puppies and adult dogs. The Department has advised pet owners to remain vigilant and seek veterinary assistance at the earliest sign of illness to help reduce complications and improve recovery outcomes.

Canine Distemper is caused by a Morbillivirus and can present a wide range of symptoms. These include high fever ranging between 103°F and 104°F, dry nose, congested eyes, occulo-nasal discharge, pneumonia, loss of appetite, vomiting, abdominal pain, restlessness, excessive excitement, jaw chomping, increased salivation, convulsions, epilepsy, chorea or involuntary muscle movements, and hardening of footpads that may result in lameness.

The Department stated that vaccination remains the only effective method of preventing the disease. Officials noted that there is currently no specific cure once a dog becomes infected. Treatment focuses on supportive care, management of secondary infections, control of gastrointestinal and neurological symptoms, and fluid therapy to prevent dehydration.

Pet owners have been advised to maintain strict hygiene standards within their premises and immediately isolate infected animals to limit transmission. The Department also recommended ensuring that all dogs receive timely vaccinations. The first vaccine dose is generally administered between six and eight weeks of age, followed by booster doses every three to four weeks until the puppy reaches 16 to 20 weeks of age.

Authorities further advised limiting the exposure of unvaccinated dogs to other animals, particularly in public places. Regular cleaning of food and water bowls has also been recommended. The Department noted that common household disinfectants, including a diluted bleach solution, can effectively destroy the virus.

For dogs showing symptoms, owners have been advised to provide a soft or liquid diet and maintain hydration and electrolyte balance. Veterinary-supervised fluid therapy may be necessary in severe cases involving vomiting or diarrhoea.

The Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services stated that it is closely monitoring the situation and appealed to pet owners and the public to cooperate in preventing the further spread of the disease across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
