Oslo, June 5: Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa boosted his chances of winning the prestigious Norway Chess title after defeating reigning world champion D Gukesh in a crucial classical game, setting up a thrilling final-round showdown in Oslo.
The victory came in Round 9 and proved decisive in tightening the race for the championship. Playing with the black pieces, Praggnanandhaa capitalised on inaccuracies by Gukesh in the middlegame and gradually seized control before converting his advantage into a full-point victory.
The result earned the Indian star three valuable points and moved him to 15 points in the standings, just half a point behind tournament leader Wesley So.
With one round remaining, the battle for the Norway Chess crown remains wide open.
Tournament leader Wesley So maintained his narrow advantage after drawing his classical game against world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen. The American Grandmaster then triumphed in the Armageddon tiebreak, securing the additional points needed to stay atop the leaderboard with 15.5 points.
Meanwhile, Alireza Firouzja also kept his championship hopes alive. After surviving a difficult classical encounter against Vincent Keymer, Firouzja prevailed in Armageddon and climbed to 14.5 points, remaining firmly in contention.
The standings after Round 9 leave the tournament delicately poised. Wesley So leads with 15.5 points, followed by Praggnanandhaa on 15 points and Firouzja on 14.5 points. With only one round left, all three players remain mathematically capable of lifting the title.
Praggnanandhaa’s victory over Gukesh was particularly significant given the stature of his opponent. Gukesh, the reigning world champion, came under pressure during the middlegame as Praggnanandhaa steadily improved his position. Once the initiative shifted, the Chennai-born Grandmaster displayed precise technique to convert the advantage and claim one of the most important wins of his tournament campaign.
The result also added another chapter to the growing rivalry between India’s leading young chess stars, both of whom have emerged as major figures on the global chess circuit.
In the women’s competition, the title race has already been settled.
Kazakhstan’s Bibisara Assaubayeva secured the Norway Chess Women 2026 crown with one round still to play after extending her lead beyond the reach of her nearest challengers.
Assaubayeva drew her classical game against Anna Muzychuk. Although Muzychuk later secured the Armageddon victory and the extra points, Assaubayeva’s overall lead remained mathematically unassailable.
The only decisive classical result in the women’s section came from China’s Zhu Jiner, who defeated India’s Divya Deshmukh with the black pieces. Zhu maintained pressure throughout the game and capitalised when Divya ran short of time, earning a crucial victory that lifted her into second place.
Another closely contested encounter saw India’s Koneru Humpy draw her classical game against reigning Women’s World Champion Ju Wenjun. Ju later emerged victorious in the Armageddon tiebreak to secure the additional points.
After Round 9, Assaubayeva leads the women’s standings with 16.5 points and has already sealed the title. Zhu Jiner occupies second place with 13 points, while Anna Muzychuk is third on 12 points.
With the men’s title race heading into a dramatic final round and several top players still in contention, Norway Chess 2026 is set for an exciting finish.
