Sri Vijaya Puram April 2: A Consumers Cooperative Stores Ltd. (CCS) vehicle transporting commercial cylinders crashed near the Tata Motors showroom in Shadipur, Sri Vijaya Puram, on Thursday morning between 10:25 AM and 10:35 AM. The vehicle was traveling from the warehouse toward the market when it reportedly suffered brake failure while descending the slope from Hawaghar.
The driver, identified as T. Murugesan, attempted to stop the vehicle by hitting two electric poles, but the effort failed. The vehicle veered off the road and fell into a roadside ditch. Four labourers were on board at the time of the accident. The driver and one labourer sustained minor injuries and were admitted to a nearby hospital, while the remaining three escaped unharmed.
Officials confirmed that no cylinder explosion occurred, as the vehicle was carrying small commercial cylinders, preventing a potentially serious hazard. Emergency services, including an ambulance and the fire brigade, responded promptly to the incident. A secondary CCS vehicle was deployed to safely transfer the cylinders from the accident site.
The vehicle’s fall caused temporary disruption in traffic flow near the market area. Authorities conducted on-site clearance and ensured the cylinders were removed without incident.
The driver and injured labourer received immediate medical attention, and their condition was reported as stable. The remaining passengers did not require treatment. The CCS management coordinated with emergency responders to manage the situation efficiently and clear the route.
Investigation into the cause of the brake failure is ongoing. Officials have documented the vehicle condition and are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident.
