Sri Vijaya Puram, July 25: The Directorate of Art and Culture, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, concluded its month-long theatre workshop with a stage presentation of Munshi Premchand’s Duniya Ka Sabse Anmol Ratan, marking the culmination of an initiative aimed at promoting theatre among young people and the wider community in the islands. The production-oriented workshop was organised in collaboration with the National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi, from June 25 to July 24, 2026.
The concluding performance was staged at the Andaman Club, where the workshop had been conducted over the past month. Priyanka Kumari, Director of Art and Culture, attended the valedictory programme as the chief guest.
Addressing the gathering, Priyanka Kumari said the presentation of a thought-provoking play at the conclusion of the workshop made the occasion special. She stated that the Andaman and Nicobar Islands possess considerable artistic talent and emphasised the importance of proper guidance and systematic training in theatre and other performing arts to help nurture local artistes.
She also acknowledged the contribution of the faculty members from the National School of Drama, who travelled from the mainland and spent an entire month mentoring participants. According to the Directorate, she expressed gratitude for their commitment, expertise and guidance in developing local talent. Participation certificates were distributed to all workshop participants during the concluding programme.
The theatrical production, based on Munshi Premchand’s story Duniya Ka Sabse Anmol Ratan, highlighted themes of compassion, selfless sacrifice, humanity and moral courage. The performance was presented by participants of the production-oriented theatre workshop after a month of training, rehearsals and preparation covering different aspects of theatrical performance.
According to the Directorate, the audience appreciated and applauded the participants for their performance during the concluding presentation.
The workshop was conducted under the guidance of Surendra Sharma, Workshop Director from the National School of Drama, New Delhi, with Avinash Deshpande serving as Assistant Director. The Directorate stated that the participants refined their artistic abilities during the programme while also developing an understanding of the discipline and collaborative approach required in theatre.
The programme began with a welcome address delivered by Kanak Radha Chatterjee, Assistant Director, Art and Culture. The month-long initiative formed part of the Directorate’s efforts to encourage theatre and strengthen performing arts activities among the youth and general public in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
