National Handicrafts Week begins in A&N Islands with handicraft fair and exhibitions

Date:

National Handicrafts Week began in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Monday, with the Directorate of Industries launching a weeklong celebration to honour the creativity and resilience of the country’s artisans. The event, held from December 8 to 14, aims to highlight the contribution of craftspeople and reinforce efforts to preserve and promote India’s diverse handicraft traditions.

Residents have been encouraged to support local artisans by purchasing indigenous products and sharing their experiences online using the hashtags #MyHandicraftsMyPride and #MyProductMyPride. Organisers said the campaign seeks to strengthen visibility, market access and income opportunities for artisans while promoting the values of swadeshi and self-reliance.

As part of the observance, a Handicraft Fair and Exhibition has been set up on the first floor of ANE-Sagarika in Sri Vijaya Puram. The exhibition showcases a wide range of local crafts and includes live demonstrations by artisans, giving visitors an opportunity to witness traditional techniques and interact directly with creators from the islands.

The exhibition was inaugurated by Atul Soni, Director of Industries, in the presence of artisans, officials and visitors. The event underscored the Administration’s continued efforts to support craftspeople and expand the reach of island-based handicrafts.

Artisans and beneficiaries from ANE-Sagarika, Khadi Gramodyog Bhawan, Coir Board and departments including Rural Development, Panchayati Raj Institutions, Urban Local Bodies and Tribal Welfare are participating in the fair. Their displays feature a mix of traditional and contemporary crafts that reflect the unique cultural identity of the islands.

Organisers said the weeklong celebration stands as a tribute to the nation’s master artisans and reinforces a collective commitment to strengthening the handicraft sector in the islands for generations ahead.
