Sri Vijaya Puram, May 13: A 34 year old man was arrested after the Anti-Narcotics Police Station allegedly recovered 940 grams of ganja during a special operation conducted near Captain Ashim Kumar Bhattacharjee Park at Junglighat in Sri Vijaya Puram on May 12.
The operation was carried out following specific intelligence inputs regarding the suspected movement of narcotic substances in the area. A police team from the Anti-Narcotics Police Station intercepted the accused while he was reportedly carrying a trolley bag near the park.
The arrested individual has been identified as Manirul Sarder, son of Shri Iman Ali Sardar, a private labourer and resident of Prem Nagar near the Electricity Site Office in Sri Vijaya Puram.

The police during the search of the trolley bag, approximately 940 grams of ganja was allegedly recovered concealed inside the luggage. The contraband was subsequently seized and the accused was arrested under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 after completion of the required legal formalities.
The official operation was conducted by a team led by Inspector K. Binoj, Station House Officer of the Anti-Narcotics Police Station. The team included Sub-Inspector Manoj Lal, Head Constable Laxman Rao, Head Constable (Selection Grade) Ratan Das, Police Constable Raja Rao, Police Constable Tulasi Rao and Police Constable Karuna Kant Pandey.
The raid was supervised by Smt. Suma Madda, DANIPS, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Narcotics).
Further investigation is underway to determine the source of the seized narcotic substance and identify other individuals who may be connected to the alleged supply and distribution network.
The seizure comes amid continued concern over the circulation of narcotic substances in the Islands and the growing challenges faced by enforcement agencies in monitoring illegal trafficking routes. Law enforcement officials have, in recent years, registered multiple cases under the NDPS Act involving possession, transport and sale of cannabis and other prohibited substances across different parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
While regular enforcement drives and intelligence-based operations are being conducted, concerns regarding substance abuse, especially among younger populations, continue to remain a subject of public discussion. Enforcement alone is not sufficient, and that awareness campaigns, rehabilitation support, and community level interventions are equally important in addressing the broader issue of drug abuse.
Police have appealed to residents to share information regarding suspected drug trafficking or substance abuse activities. Citizens have been asked to immediately report suspicious activities through emergency helpline number 112 or contact local police authorities through the numbers 234216, 9434280055 and 9531856080.
