Sri Vijaya Puram, August 18: A 20-year-old murder case from Rangat has ended in a life sentence, with the Additional Sessions Judge, South Andaman District, on August 14, 2026, sentencing the accused to rigorous imprisonment for life and imposing a fine of ₹50,000. The case, registered as FIR No. 67/2006 at Rangat police station under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), relates to the killing of a man during an altercation at Parnasala, Rangat, on April 12, 2006.
According to the case details, the incident followed what was described as a trivial altercation between the accused and his friend. The accused attacked his friend with a sharp-edged weapon, causing injuries that resulted in his death.
Following a complaint, police registered the case at Rangat police station and began the investigation. Devadas, the then Station House Officer (SHO) of Rangat police station, initially investigated the case.
The investigation was later taken forward by Anil Kumar Singh and M.A. Naushad, who subsequently served as SHOs of Rangat police station. The investigation involved collecting evidence connected with the killing and presenting the material before the court during the prosecution of the case.
The evidence collected during the investigation was subsequently placed before the Additional Sessions Judge, South Andaman District, for adjudication. The court convicted the accused and pronounced the sentence on August 14, awarding rigorous imprisonment for life along with the ₹50,000 fine.
The conviction brings a long-running criminal case arising from the 2006 incident to a conclusion at the trial court level. The case had remained registered under Section 302 IPC, the provision dealing with murder, since its registration on April 12, 2006.
The proceedings involved successive investigating officers at Rangat police station, with Devadas handling the initial investigation before Anil Kumar Singh and M.A. Naushad continued the case.
The court’s order now establishes the punishment imposed on the accused for the killing that occurred at Parnasala following the altercation. The sentence comprises rigorous imprisonment for life and a fine of ₹50,000.
