In the lead-up to World Fisheries Day 2025, the Department of Fisheries, in partnership with the Department of Education, has conducted a series of student-centered competitions aimed at fostering deeper awareness of the Islands’ marine ecosystem. The events, ranging from quizzes to poster-making and essay competitions, were held across schools and colleges, drawing enthusiastic participation from young learners.
The pre-events served as platforms for students to explore subjects such as marine biodiversity, sustainable fishing practices, and the economic potential of the fisheries sector. At Government Senior Secondary School, Junglighat, students took part in a quiz titled “Wonder World of Fishes,” which tested knowledge of fish species, oceanic behaviour and the ecological importance of aquatic life. A poster competition on “Marine Biodiversity of A&N Islands” encouraged students to illustrate key marine habitats, conservation priorities, and species diversity.
At the college level, the Zoology Department of JNRM hosted an essay competition on “Fisheries Potential of A&N Islands: Way Forward for Fisheries Economy Development.” Students reflected on sustainable growth pathways, innovative aquaculture options, and strategies to enhance value addition for fishermen and fish farmers.
The winners of all pre-event competitions will be felicitated during the official World Fisheries Day programme on November 21 at TGCE Auditorium. The event will include several landmark announcements for the sector, including the launch of Commercial Open Sea Cage Culture, the closing ceremony of the 45-Day Seaweed Training Programme, the release of a Seaweed Farming Documentary, and the distribution of the World Fisheries Day Awards 2025.
This year’s theme, “India’s Blue Transformation – Strengthening Value Addition in Seafood Exports,” reflects national commitments to improving export-oriented fisheries, sustainable marine practices and livelihood generation. The Andaman & Nicobar Administration’s initiatives echo this vision, focusing on innovation, youth engagement and ecosystem-based stewardship.
