Rangat, June 9: More than 100 cyclists, including school students, youth, sportspersons, nature enthusiasts and Panchayati Raj Institution representatives, took to the roads of Rangat to mark World Bicycle Day 2026, highlighting the importance of sustainable transportation and healthy living.
The event was organized by the Office of the Assistant Commissioner, Middle Andaman, in coordination with PRI institutions and various line departments of the Rangat unit. The rally aimed to encourage the use of bicycles as an environmentally friendly mode of transport while promoting physical activity among young people.
The cycling rally was formally flagged off by Deepanshu Vohra, Assistant Commissioner, Middle Andaman, who emphasized the role of cycling in fostering fitness, reducing environmental pollution and encouraging active lifestyles.
Participants assembled early in the morning at the Rangat Check Post, from where the rally commenced at 7 a.m. The cyclists travelled along the designated route to the Forest Range Office at Rampur before returning to the finishing point at the check post.
The rally transformed the route into a vibrant display of community participation, with cyclists from different age groups riding together in support of healthier lifestyles and cleaner modes of transportation.
Officials said the observance was part of a broader effort to create awareness about the social, environmental and health benefits associated with cycling. As concerns over pollution, traffic congestion and sedentary lifestyles continue to grow, bicycles are increasingly being promoted worldwide as a practical and sustainable alternative for short-distance travel.
World Bicycle Day, observed annually on June 3, recognizes the bicycle as a simple, affordable, reliable and environmentally sustainable means of transport. The day also highlights the bicycle’s contribution to health, education and social inclusion.
Speaking on the occasion, officials noted that regular cycling not only improves cardiovascular fitness and physical endurance but also contributes to mental well-being. Encouraging young people to participate in sports and outdoor activities, they said, can help address lifestyle-related health concerns and promote discipline, teamwork and self-confidence.
The participation of school students formed a significant part of the event, reflecting efforts to instill healthy habits at an early age. Organizers said engaging students in activities such as cycling rallies helps raise awareness about fitness while encouraging responsible environmental behaviour.
Youth clubs and local organizations also joined the programme, adding to the community spirit of the event. Several participants described the rally as an enjoyable way to combine recreation, fitness and environmental awareness.
Nature lovers who took part in the rally highlighted the suitability of cycling for the islands’ scenic landscapes, noting that bicycles provide an opportunity to explore local surroundings while minimizing environmental impact.
Representatives of PRI institutions who participated in the event stressed the need to promote cycling not only as a recreational activity but also as a practical transportation option wherever feasible. They noted that increasing bicycle usage can help reduce fuel consumption and contribute to environmental conservation efforts.
Officials said events such as the World Bicycle Day rally are intended to inspire people to incorporate physical activity into their daily routines and explore healthier alternatives to motorized transport.
The programme also aligned with broader public health objectives that encourage regular exercise as a means of preventing lifestyle diseases and improving overall quality of life.
As the rally concluded, participants expressed enthusiasm for similar events in the future. Organizers indicated that awareness campaigns promoting fitness, sports and environmentally responsible practices would continue to be encouraged through community participation and inter-departmental collaboration.
The successful turnout and enthusiastic response underscored growing public interest in wellness-oriented activities and demonstrated how community events can be used to promote both health and environmental sustainability in the islands.
