DLSA Hosts Workshop on Workplace Sexual Harassment for Legal Professionals

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, July 5: The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) in South Andaman conducted a legal sensitisation programme focusing on sexual harassment of women at the workplace. The event, held at the District Court Complex in Sri Vijaya Puram, was attended by court staff, judicial officers, and practicing lawyers.

The awareness program aimed to promote legal literacy and provide a deeper understanding of women’s rights in the workplace. The DLSA underlined its continued commitment to safeguarding the dignity of working women through regular education campaigns and redressal support.

Officials elaborated on the legal provisions that empower women to report incidents of harassment and highlighted the procedural framework in place to address such complaints. Participants were informed about the internal complaint committees and legal aid available under existing statutes.

Legal professionals in attendance were also briefed on their role in ensuring safe workplace environments and the importance of supporting complainants during the redressal process. The initiative sought to strengthen judicial and legal sensitivity towards workplace harassment cases.

The program comes amid increasing public discourse on workplace safety, especially in government and legal institutions. By targeting those within the justice delivery system, the session aimed to lead by example and reinforce institutional accountability.

While the DLSA regularly holds awareness drives across the district, this particular event focused on sensitizing court employees and legal representatives who often act as first responders in such cases. The initiative emphasized the need for institutional clarity and legal responsiveness in upholding workplace dignity.

The awareness event is part of a broader national framework that encourages legal services authorities to educate various stakeholders on gender-sensitive legal practices proactively. It aligns with ongoing efforts to curb sexual harassment by fostering a workplace culture rooted in respect, safety, and legal awareness.

By conducting the session within a court setting, the DLSA has taken a direct approach to address an issue often clouded by social stigma and procedural confusion. The program is expected to act as a template for similar future engagements across the islands.
