Landmark Convictions in POCSO Cases: Two Sentenced to 20 Years

Date:

In a strong affirmation of justice and deterrence, the North & Middle Andaman District Police have secured landmark convictions in two separate cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012. On October 28, 2025, the Hon’ble Special Judge (POCSO),  Subhajit Basu, sentenced two offenders, Sonu Tigga and Pritam Biswas, to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment each, along with fines of ₹20,000 in their respective cases.

The first case, Crime No. 11/2023 registered at PS Baratang, involved accused Sonu Tigga, while the second, Crime No. 12/2023 registered at PS Kadamtala, involved accused Pritam Biswas. Both were convicted under various sections of the POCSO Act for their involvement in heinous crimes against minors.

According to the police, the convictions are the result of meticulous and determined investigations by the respective teams. The investigation in Crime No. 12/2023 (PS Kadamtala) was carried out by Sub-Inspector Mariam under the leadership of the then Station House Officer, Sub-Inspector Abdul Rehman. Similarly, the investigation in Crime No. 11/2023 (PS Baratang) was led by Sub-Inspector Silpi Singha under the supervision of the then SHO, Sub-Inspector Surjit Bhattacharjee.

Police officials commended the professionalism and commitment demonstrated by the investigating teams, whose diligence and attention to detail ensured that justice was delivered swiftly and effectively. The successful prosecution of both cases underscores the collective effort of law enforcement officers to ensure accountability in crimes that threaten the safety and dignity of children.

The judgment serves as a powerful reminder that crimes against minors will be met with the harshest penalties under the law. The Andaman & Nicobar Police reiterated their zero-tolerance policy toward sexual offenses and reaffirmed their unwavering dedication to protecting children’s rights across the Islands.

The department also acknowledged the importance of public cooperation in combating such crimes. Citizens have been urged to share any credible information related to criminal or suspicious activities by contacting the nearest police station or dialing 100, 112, or 03192-273344. The police assured that informers’ identities will remain confidential and that they will be suitably rewarded for their assistance.

Through these landmark judgments, the Andaman & Nicobar Police have reinforced their commitment to upholding justice, deterring sexual crimes, and strengthening public trust in the legal system.
