Washington, April 18: US President Donald Trump announced that Iran has agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route, while asserting that US military pressure will continue until a comprehensive agreement is finalised.
Speaking at a Turning Point USA event in Arizona, Trump said the strategic waterway was now “fully open and ready for business,” indicating a possible de-escalation in one of the world’s most sensitive energy corridors. The Strait of Hormuz is a vital passage for global oil shipments, and any disruption has wide-ranging economic implications.
Despite the reopening, Trump said the United States would maintain its naval posture in the region. He stated that the existing blockade would remain in force concerning Iran until a final agreement is fully completed and signed, underlining Washington’s continued strategic pressure.
Trump expressed confidence in ongoing negotiations with Iran, stating that most key issues had already been addressed. He said the process was progressing positively and reiterated that any agreement would ensure Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons.
During his address, Trump also referred to plans involving the recovery of what he described as “nuclear dust,” suggesting efforts to retrieve material linked to previous US strikes in Iran. He indicated that such operations could involve excavation activities.
The US President linked the development to broader regional diplomacy, claiming that recent efforts had contributed to stabilising tensions. He cited what he described as an “unprecedented ceasefire” between Israel and Lebanon, attributing it to ongoing diplomatic engagement.
Trump acknowledged the role of several countries, including Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Kuwait, in supporting regional efforts. He credited these nations with contributing to the current diplomatic environment.
At the same time, Trump criticised traditional US allies in Europe, particularly NATO, stating that the United States should rely more on its own capabilities in addressing global challenges. He emphasised the strength of the US military and its readiness to operate independently.
Trump also described himself as a key figure in resolving global conflicts, claiming that multiple wars had been brought to an end through his efforts. He suggested that ongoing negotiations involving Iran and Lebanon could further expand that number.
The developments come amid heightened global attention on Middle East stability, energy security and ongoing diplomatic negotiations involving major powers.
