Washington, Oct 10: US President Donald Trump has accused the Nobel Peace Prize committee of overlooking what he described as his administration’s role in ending eight international conflicts, arguing that the United States deserved recognition for its diplomatic efforts and alleging that political considerations influenced the decision.
Addressing a Republican election rally in Syracuse, New York, on Friday, Trump called the decision an embarrassment and said the country had been denied recognition despite what he portrayed as an unprecedented record of conflict resolution.
Trump claimed responsibility for resolving eight conflicts and argued that each could have justified a separate peace prize. He cited disputes involving Kosovo and Serbia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, Armenia and Azerbaijan, Egypt and Ethiopia, and Israel and Hamas.
He also credited his administration with preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and averting a wider regional conflict. Trump said he was pursuing efforts to resolve the Russia-Ukraine war and the confrontation with Iran, while warning Tehran that it would have to meet US demands or face further consequences.
“Russia, Ukraine—we’re going to get that all done, too, and that’s happening quickly,” he said, referring to the conflicts he said his administration was working to resolve.
Trump criticised the Norwegian Nobel Committee for selecting another recipient for the 2026 award, saying he was unfamiliar with the person chosen. He described the decision as a lasting stain and argued that the committee had failed to acknowledge what he considered significant American diplomatic achievements.
He also questioned the role of the United Nations in conflict resolution, claiming that the organisation had contributed little to the disputes he said he had settled. Trump said he had not sought the UN’s assistance in those efforts.
The President argued that the award should have recognised the United States rather than an individual, saying his administration’s peace efforts had been undertaken on behalf of the American people.
The remarks came at a rally supporting Republican candidates ahead of the November 3 congressional elections. Trump also used the event to highlight his administration’s economic, immigration and national security policies.
The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, an independent five-member body appointed by Norway’s parliament. The award recognises individuals and organisations for contributions to peace, international cooperation and conflict resolution.
Trump’s claims about resolving the conflicts and preventing wider warfare were presented as his own assessment of his administration’s record. The supplied account did not include a response from the Nobel committee to his criticism.
