Awareness Programme at TGCE Emphasises Voter Enrolment and SIR Timeline

The Electoral Literacy Club (ELC) of Tagore Government College of Education (TGCE) conducted an awareness programme on “Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and the Electoral Process” in its auditorium on 13 November, aiming to strengthen voter awareness among student-teachers and improve understanding of ongoing electoral revision activities undertaken by the Election Commission of India.

The session focused on equipping trainees with clear information on voter enrolment procedures, eligibility norms, and the significance of timely participation in the electoral roll revision. The programme also underscored the importance of the SIR initiative, currently underway across the country.

Addressing the participants, N. Balakrishnan, Nodal Officer (SVEEP), explained that the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation programme, better known as SVEEP, is the Election Commission of India’s flagship initiative for voter education and literacy. He highlighted that the largest priority group under SVEEP is young citizens who have completed 18 years of age and are eligible to be enrolled as voters.

He urged TGCE trainees to take responsibility for their voter registration by filling out Form-6 and participating actively in the democratic process. He emphasized that the objective is to ensure no college student aged 18 or above is excluded from the electoral roll.

Resource persons Raja Ram and Senthil, State-Level Master Trainers, briefed participants on voter eligibility criteria and provided a detailed explanation of the enumeration process. They demonstrated the correct procedure for completing the enumeration form and addressed queries regarding voter ID corrections, inclusion requests, and deletion cases.

They informed attendees that under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision, the enumeration process is currently in progress and will continue until 4 December. The Draft Electoral Roll is scheduled for publication on 9 December 2025. Claims and objections will be accepted from 9 December 2025 to 8 January 2026. This will be followed by the Notice Phase, covering hearings and verification, from 9 December 2025 to 31 January 2026. The final Electoral Roll will be released on 7 February 2026.

The trainers encouraged the student-teachers to share this information widely with peers, relatives, neighbours, and others, stressing the importance of ensuring that all eligible individuals are enrolled and that no ineligible entries remain on the list.

Throughout the session, emphasis was placed on the value of informed electoral participation, the role of citizens in strengthening democratic institutions, and the fundamental right to vote. The programme also included a question-and-answer segment, enabling trainees to clarify doubts directly with the resource persons, making the awareness event more participatory and interactive.

The Principal of TGCE, Manjulata Rao, along with Ishrat Yousuf, Nodal Officer (ELC), encouraged students to remain informed about electoral procedures and engage proactively in democratic practices. Approximately 240 student-teachers took part in the programme, contributing to discussions and participating in the awareness activities.
