Swaraj Dweep, May 5: In a significant step towards strengthening grassroots governance and addressing local concerns, the District Administration of South Andaman conducted a Public Grievances Meeting-cum-Interaction at Swaraj Dweep on Monday. The meeting, chaired by Deputy Commissioner Purva Garg, brought together local representatives and government officials to deliberate on pressing civic and developmental issues.
Held at the Conference Hall of Dolphin Resort, the meeting saw active participation from Pradhans of Govind Nagar and Shyam Nagar, along with Ward Members and Panchayat Samiti representatives. Officials from the Revenue Department and the Andaman Public Works Department (APWD) were also present, ensuring a coordinated administrative response to the concerns raised.
The interaction served as an open platform for residents and representatives to voice their grievances and seek updates on ongoing and proposed development works. Among the major issues discussed was the construction of roads at Kalapathar and the need for improvement of the State Highway, which remains a key connectivity concern for both residents and tourists.

Tourism infrastructure also featured prominently in the discussions, with stakeholders emphasizing the holistic development of Kalapathar Beach and surrounding areas. Given the beach’s growing popularity, participants stressed the importance of planned development to balance tourism growth with environmental sustainability.
Water supply challenges were another critical concern raised during the meeting. Residents highlighted the need for a reliable supply of treated drinking water to households in Vijay Nagar, urging authorities to expedite ongoing measures and ensure consistent access.
The administration also reviewed the status of infrastructure projects under central schemes. This included an assessment of roads developed under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana and a pending road project under MPLADS at Govind Nagar. Officials assured that delays would be addressed and progress expedited.
Issues related to Solid and Liquid Waste Management (SLWM) were discussed, particularly focusing on the accountability of hotels and tourism establishments in maintaining environmental standards. Authorities indicated that stricter enforcement of waste management rules would be undertaken to preserve the ecological balance of the island.
The meeting also covered social welfare and community development aspects, including the co-location of Anganwadi Workers (AWWs) near schools and pre-primary institutions to improve early childhood care and education. Electrification efforts under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana were reviewed, alongside housing-related concerns under schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and village development initiatives.
Officials reiterated that such interactions are vital for responsive governance and help bridge the gap between administration and citizens. The District Administration reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive growth and assured that all grievances would be addressed in a time-bound and effective manner.
With Swaraj Dweep continuing to evolve as a major tourism hub, the administration emphasized the need for sustainable development practices that prioritize both infrastructure and community welfare.
