The Andaman & Nicobar Administration has approved the installation and commissioning of four high-capacity water pumps at the SVPMC headquarters to ensure uninterrupted and improved drinking water supply in the area.
The project, with an approved cost of Rs. 2.69 crore, involves installing four 410 HP pumps to strengthen critical water infrastructure and enhance public service delivery. Once operational, the pumps will convey water more efficiently to the SVPMC command tanks, enabling faster filling and easing stress on the existing distribution network.
Officials said the initiative addresses a long-standing concern raised by Ward Councillors regarding low water pressure in parts of the network. The upgraded pumping capacity is expected to benefit residents in Garacharma and Bazaar areas, providing a more reliable and consistent drinking water supply.
The Administration highlighted that the project is part of ongoing efforts to modernize water infrastructure across the islands, ensuring that essential services like potable water are delivered efficiently to communities. The high-capacity pumps are designed to meet current and anticipated future demand, reducing the likelihood of supply disruptions and improving overall network performance.
The installation and commissioning will be closely monitored to ensure timely completion and operational efficiency. Authorities confirmed that once the system is fully functional, residents will experience improved water availability and faster restoration during maintenance or supply interruptions.
This initiative is aligned with broader development priorities of the Andaman & Nicobar Administration, which include modernizing utility infrastructure, improving public service delivery, and addressing long-pending local demands in urban areas.
By upgrading the pumping capacity, the Administration aims to enhance water distribution, mitigate low-pressure issues, and provide residents with a dependable supply, reflecting a focus on both efficiency and sustainability. The project also represents a proactive step to strengthen resilience of water infrastructure against increasing demand and operational challenges.
Officials urged local residents to cooperate during the installation phase and assured that the Administration remains committed to ensuring uninterrupted water supply across SVPMC and other key urban areas.
The project underscores the Administration’s continued efforts to prioritize essential services, modernize infrastructure, and address community concerns effectively, demonstrating a commitment to improving the quality of life for citizens in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
