The Electricity Department of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration has commissioned an additional 4 MW power generation capacity at the Bambooflat Sub-Station campus, raising the total available generation capacity during evening peak hours in Sri Vijaya Puram to 45 MW. The enhancement forms part of ongoing measures to strengthen electricity supply and address rising demand in the region.
According to the department, earlier augmentation efforts had already added 7 MW of capacity, taking the available peak-hour generation level to 41 MW. The latest commissioning increases this capacity further, with officials indicating that the step is expected to improve system reliability and facilitate more stable electricity supply, particularly to rural feeders.
The department stated that these capacity expansion measures are being undertaken under the guidance of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration to address increasing electricity demand in Sri Vijaya Puram and surrounding areas. The focus remains on improving generation capability while maintaining continuity of supply across both urban and rural networks.
Officials noted that deployment of diesel generator sets and renewable energy sources continues as part of ongoing operational strategies to meet current electricity demand. These measures aim to maintain supply stability while longer-term infrastructure augmentation initiatives are pursued.
At the same time, electricity consumers have been encouraged to consider installation of Rooftop Solar systems under the PM Suryaghar Muft Bijli Yojana. The scheme enables eligible consumers to access both Central and Union Territory subsidies and is positioned as a step toward greater energy self-reliance.
The department highlighted that wider adoption of rooftop solar installations could help reduce reliance on diesel-based power generation while supporting environmental sustainability goals. Increased renewable energy participation is also expected to contribute to gradual de-dieselization of the Islands’ power sector.
Officials reiterated that strengthening electricity infrastructure remains an ongoing priority, with continued emphasis on enhancing generation capacity, improving system resilience, and ensuring dependable power supply to residents across the Islands.
The Electricity Department affirmed its commitment to maintaining energy security and supporting infrastructure improvements necessary to meet the growing electricity needs of Sri Vijaya Puram and other areas. Consumers have also been urged to cooperate in adopting sustainable energy practices as part of broader efforts to stabilise power supply in the region.
