₹3.66-Crore Water Supply Upgrade Approved for Sitanagar, North & Middle Andaman

Date:

Administration has approved a ₹3.66-crore project to improve water supply infrastructure in Sitanagar village of North and Middle Andaman, including new reservoirs, overhead tanks and pumping links to strengthen daily water availability.

The sanctioned project includes construction of a Clear Water Reservoir (CWR) with a storage capacity of 3.65 lakh litres and two Overhead Tanks (OHTs) of 1.05 lakh litres capacity each. The infrastructure expansion is intended to stabilise water availability and address distribution constraints affecting sections of the village.

As part of the project scope, the newly constructed storage facilities will be integrated with the existing Water Treatment Plant through pipeline connections supported by pumping arrangements. These measures are expected to enhance transmission efficiency and support more consistent water delivery once the project becomes operational.

Officials indicated that the initiative forms part of continuing administrative efforts to strengthen water supply systems across the Islands, particularly in areas facing growing demand and infrastructure stress. The project is designed to improve daily water supply reliability while addressing emerging consumption needs linked to population growth and local development.

Implementation responsibility has been assigned to the Andaman Public Works Department, which will oversee construction, installation and operational integration of the facilities. The department is expected to execute the project with the objective of improving service delivery standards and supporting long-term sustainability of the local water supply network.

Upon completion, authorities expect the upgraded infrastructure to reduce supply fluctuations and improve storage capacity, thereby ensuring more dependable access to treated water in the targeted parts of Sitanagar village. The initiative is positioned as a capacity-building intervention within broader water management efforts in the region.

At the same time, residents have been advised to use water responsibly, particularly in view of seasonal variations that typically affect availability during the summer months. Authorities emphasised that judicious consumption remains critical even as infrastructure improvements are undertaken.

The project reflects ongoing administrative focus on strengthening essential civic infrastructure while addressing challenges related to resource management and service delivery in island settings, where storage capacity, pumping efficiency and treatment linkages play a crucial role in maintaining consistent public water supply.
