Sri Vijaya Puram, June 12: As part of an intensified campaign to safeguard public assets, the District Administration of South Andaman conducted a multi-site eviction drive, reclaiming over 2000 square meters of encroached government land in various parts of the district. The operations, executed by the Revenue Department with police and enforcement support, targeted illegal occupations in North Bay, Calicut, Nayashahar, and Dairy Farm.
At North Bay, a 0.02-hectare parcel adjacent to a public road was found under unauthorised occupation, obstructing free access. The land was vacated and restored to official records, ensuring continued public passage and preventing future obstruction.
Further inspections in Calicut revealed fresh encroachments over 0.10 hectares where barbed wire fences had been recently erected across three connected land patches. The fencing was promptly dismantled, and the land was reclaimed on-site.
In Nayashahar, the authorities identified and removed an under-construction temporary hut from a 0.02-hectare plot of government land. The illegal structure was demolished peacefully and the land was formally recorded back into government possession.
In addition to these field operations, the district administration also executed a court-backed eviction at Dairy Farm in Sri Vijaya Puram. Following an order issued by the Estate Officer under the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act, 1971, officials evicted a longstanding illegal occupant from 0.064 hectares of land. The cleared parcel has now been handed over to ANIIDCO for development of the milk plant facility.
All actions were conducted under the legal framework of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands Land Revenue and Land Reforms Regulation, 1966. The operations were carried out without law-and-order disruptions and in full compliance with due process.
The Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman, has reiterated the administration’s zero-tolerance policy toward encroachment. Citizens have been urged not to occupy public land without proper authorisation and to cooperate in preserving community resources.
The administration has encouraged the public to report encroachments through its control room helpline, assuring confidentiality to all informants. Authorities have also warned that anti-encroachment operations will continue unabated wherever unauthorised land use is discovered.
This series of coordinated actions is seen as a critical step in reclaiming public land for developmental and civic infrastructure projects, particularly in rapidly urbanising regions of South Andaman. The administration has made it clear that similar enforcement efforts will remain ongoing.
