In a continued effort to reclaim government land and safeguard community access to common resources, the District Administration of South Andaman on Monday conducted eviction drives at Hobdypur and Wimberlygunj villages under Ferrargunj Tehsil. The operations focused on removing unlawful encroachments and restoring public pathways to ensure they serve their intended purpose for the larger community.
At Hobdypur, the Revenue team acted against an attempt to occupy government land through unauthorized plantations. Encroachers had planted arecanut trees on land earmarked for public use. During the drive, the plantation was cleared, and an area of 0.05 hectares was restored to the government khata. Officials stated that the restored land would now be available for rightful use, reflecting the administration’s resolve to protect public property from private occupation.
In Wimberlygunj, the eviction operation addressed a longstanding issue that had obstructed a designated public pathway. The encroachment had caused inconvenience for villagers by blocking free passage for years. With the obstruction now removed, residents regained access to the pathway, resolving a grievance that had persisted in the locality. The clearance of the path was described as a significant step in restoring public rights of way and preventing future disruptions.
The eviction drives were carried out under the supervision of the Tehsildar, Ferrargunj, and in the presence of the Pradhan, Gram Panchayat Wimberlygunj, ensuring cooperation with local authorities. Despite adverse weather conditions, the Revenue team, supported by Panchayat representatives, completed the operations successfully, underlining the administration’s determination to act against encroachments regardless of challenges.
The District Administration has reiterated that government land and designated public pathways exist for the collective welfare of the community. It emphasized that encroachments not only deprive citizens of rightful access but also undermine long-term planning for infrastructure and development. As part of its commitment to transparency, the administration urged the public to report illegal constructions or encroachments through the District Control Room via telephone numbers 03192-240127/238881/1070 or WhatsApp at 9531888844. It further assured that all information provided would be treated with strict confidentiality to protect individuals who come forward.
The administration also reminded citizens that grievances or queries related to land can be addressed directly with authorities, underscoring that prompt reporting and community cooperation are essential to safeguarding public resources. Officials noted that strict measures against encroachment will continue in the larger public interest, with a focus on ensuring that common spaces remain accessible to all.
