Sri Vijaya Puram, October 16: The South Andaman district administration collected approximately 250 kg of waste during a cleanliness drive at the District Office premises, as part of Swachhata Special Campaign 6.0, and directed officers and staff to conduct similar drives for two hours on every working day until October 30, 2026.
The drive focused on clearing waste, scrap and obsolete materials, improving the use of available office space and maintaining hygiene across the premises. The campaign, being observed from October 2 to 30, aims to improve cleanliness and workplace organisation in government offices.
Deputy Commissioner of South Andaman, along with the Assistant Commissioner and Additional District Magistrate, participated in the exercise with district administration officers and staff, including CDVs, DRMs and contractual personnel. Teams covered various sections of the office complex and collected the waste for appropriate disposal.
Following the exercise, the Deputy Commissioner directed all officers and employees of the District Office to undertake cleanliness drives from 8.30 am to 10.30 am on every working day until the campaign concludes. The schedule is intended to sustain regular cleaning, improve the organisation of office spaces and maintain hygiene across the government premises.
The administration has also specified procedures for handling the waste collected during these activities. Staff must segregate the material appropriately, including electronic waste, and hand it over to authorised agencies for scientific disposal in accordance with applicable guidelines and prescribed procedures.
The focus on segregation and authorised disposal extends the exercise beyond the removal of accumulated waste to its subsequent handling. The directions also require staff to make better use of available space within the office premises.
The cleanliness drive followed directions from the Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands for active participation in Swachhata Special Campaign 6.0. The South Andaman district administration has called on its officers and employees to participate regularly and continue responsible waste-management practices beyond individual cleaning exercises.
The administration said it would continue efforts to maintain a clean and orderly workplace through routine cleaning and proper waste disposal. The campaign runs until October 30, with daily drives scheduled during working hours as directed by the Deputy Commissioner.
