Trump Aide Sergio Gor Takes Charge as US Envoy to India

US President Donald Trump on Monday participated in the swearing-in ceremony of his close aide Sergio Gor as the new US Ambassador to India, underscoring Washington’s continued focus on strengthening Indo-US ties in defence, trade, and strategic cooperation.

In an official statement, the White House confirmed that President Trump attended the “Swearing-in Ceremony for the Ambassador to the Republic of India.” Gor, 38, will soon assume office in New Delhi following the ceremony.

Confirmed by a Senate vote in October, Gor becomes the youngest-ever US ambassador to India. A long-time associate of Trump, he previously served as Director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office, responsible for vetting over 4,000 positions within the administration.

Trump had announced Gor’s nomination on Truth Social in August, stating, “For the most populous Region in the World, it is important that I have someone I can fully trust to deliver on my Agenda and help us ‘Make America Great Again’. Sergio will make an incredible Ambassador.”

Alongside his ambassadorial role, Gor will also serve as a special envoy for South and Central Asian affairs, reflecting his expanded diplomatic responsibilities in the region.

During his Senate confirmation hearing in September, Gor described India as a “strategic partner whose trajectory will shape the region and beyond.” He emphasized that India’s geographic importance, economic growth, and military capabilities make it vital for regional stability and global prosperity.

“India is one of the most important relationships our nation has in the world,” Gor stated, outlining his commitment to deepening defence cooperation, promoting equitable trade, enhancing energy security, and advancing technology partnerships.

He also highlighted plans to expand joint military exercises, boost co-development and co-production of defence systems, and finalize critical defence sales between the two nations.

In September, prior to his appointment, Gor met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. The US State Department’s Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs said both leaders reaffirmed their intent to further advance the US-India partnership.

Following his Senate confirmation, Gor visited India for four days, meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior Indian officials. After the meeting, he posted on X, “An honour to be with PM Narendra Modi this evening. Our relationship with India will only strengthen over the months ahead.”

Prime Minister Modi, in his response, expressed optimism about Gor’s appointment, saying, “Glad to receive Mr. Sergio Gor… I’m confident that his tenure will further strengthen the India–US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.”

Gor’s appointment is expected to reinforce the growing synergy between Washington and New Delhi, with both nations prioritizing defence collaboration, technology exchange, and economic resilience in an evolving global order.
