A recent landslide in Sri Vijaya Puram, South Andaman, has led to the indefinite closure of a key road segment between Government Press and Hotel Sinclairs. The District Magistrate enforced this closure under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, effective from May 10, 2025, to ensure public safety.
Both vehicular and pedestrian movements are strictly prohibited along the affected stretch. Traffic is being diverted via the South Point to Press route to maintain connectivity. Residents and commuters are advised to plan their travel accordingly and cooperate with the administration during this period.
This incident underscores the vulnerability of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to landslides, particularly during the monsoon season. Factors such as heavy rainfall, seismic activity, and infrastructural developments contribute to the region’s susceptibility.
In response to such challenges, local authorities and experts have emphasized the need for proactive measures, including the construction of retaining walls in landslide-prone areas, to mitigate risks and ensure the safety of residents and infrastructure.
As the situation develops, the administration will provide updates on the road’s status and any further safety measures being implemented.
