Awareness Push In Rangat Highlights Water Conservation

Date:

Efforts to strengthen awareness on sustainable water use gathered momentum in Rangat with the Andaman Public Works Department organising a water conservation awareness programme aimed at sensitising residents about the importance of preserving water resources.

The programme was conducted recently at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Auditorium and brought together officials, Panchayat representatives and members of the local community. The initiative focused on highlighting the growing need for responsible water consumption and the protection of available freshwater resources in the region.

The awareness drive was organised by the local team of the Andaman Public Works Department as part of ongoing efforts to encourage community participation in water conservation practices. Officials explained that such programmes are intended to promote public understanding of water-related challenges while encouraging individuals and institutions to adopt practices that reduce wastage.

A number of cultural activities were presented during the programme to communicate the conservation message in an engaging manner. Performances and artistic presentations were used to highlight the importance of preserving water resources for both present and future generations.

Among the highlights of the programme was a theatrical performance staged specifically to convey the importance of water conservation and the responsible use of water in everyday life. Through dramatized storytelling and visual expression, the performance sought to draw attention to the consequences of water wastage and the need for collective action in protecting this essential resource.

Officials also used the event to inform residents about measures being introduced to improve water supply management in the region. It was announced that a dedicated control room has been established to address complaints related to water supply and to ensure quick response to leakages in the system.

The control room has been set up with the objective of maintaining a zero-leakage approach within the water supply network. Authorities indicated that the facility will enable residents to report issues related to water supply disruptions or pipeline leaks, allowing departments to respond promptly and minimize losses caused by wastage.

Members of the public residing in Rangat tehsil have been advised that water supply complaints can be reported through the control room numbers 03192-274236 and 03192-274237. The initiative is expected to strengthen coordination between the department and residents in addressing supply-related problems.

The programme was attended by senior officials and local representatives including the Chief Engineer of the public works department, the Assistant Commissioner of Rangat, the Up-Adhyaksh and the Pramukh. During the event, the speakers highlighted the increasing importance of water conservation in the islands, where freshwater resources are limited and dependent on seasonal rainfall patterns.

The officials emphasized that responsible use of water resources is essential to ensure long-term availability for communities across the region. They also acknowledged the role of public awareness in achieving sustainable water management and appreciated the initiative taken by the department to organise the awareness programme.

Suggestions were also made during the event to expand similar awareness campaigns to Panchayats across the region. Local representatives recommended that such programmes should be conducted in every Panchayat so that awareness about water conservation can reach households at the grassroots level.

The programme witnessed active participation from residents, Panchayat members and departmental officials, reflecting community interest in addressing water-related concerns. The engagement of local stakeholders was seen as a meaningful step toward strengthening collective responsibility for safeguarding water resources.

Officials noted that sustained public awareness, combined with responsive grievance mechanisms such as the new control room, can help improve water management and reduce losses within the supply system.

With increasing pressure on freshwater availability in island regions, initiatives aimed at encouraging conservation and responsible usage are expected to play an important role in ensuring long-term water security for communities across Rangat and surrounding areas.
