Massive early morning fire guts 18 shops and 3 houses in Rangat Bazar

Authorities launch investigation, damage assessment, and relief measures; political leaders express support

Date:

A massive fire erupted in the early hours of October 26, 2025, at Rangat Bazar near the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Auditorium and Murugan Temple, completely destroying 18 commercial establishments and partially damaging three residential houses along with one RCC building belonging to the Temple Committee. The blaze, which lasted from around 1 AM to 6:30 AM, caused property losses exceeding ₹10 crore but fortunately did not result in any casualties or injuries.

Deputy Commissioner (North & Middle Andaman) Sushant Padha, IAS, visited the site along with AC(MA), SDPO, and representatives of affected families to assess the situation. He met with victims, inspected the damaged area, and assured all possible administrative support. A public meeting was convened to outline immediate measures including a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the fire, formation of a Damage Assessment Committee, and early release of compensation to affected shop owners and households.

Firefighting efforts involved a coordinated response from the Revenue Department, Police, and Fire Service personnel, supported by private water tankers and an excavator provided by National Highway authorities. The quick and joint efforts of these teams were crucial in containing the fire and preventing further spread.

Political leaders expressed solidarity with those affected. Member of Parliament Bishnu Pada Ray conveyed deep sorrow and urged authorities to ensure timely relief and rehabilitation, while State BJP President Anil Kumar Tiwari expressed anguish and sought an independent enquiry into the incident. Tiwari also requested that appropriate compensation and interim relief be provided to victims, including local party leaders affected by the blaze.

The administration has reiterated its commitment to support affected families, coordinate relief measures, and restore normalcy in Rangat. Residents and shop owners have been advised to cooperate with authorities for damage assessment and relief disbursement.

The Rangat fire highlights the need for preventive measures in old wooden markets and robust disaster management planning. Quick response and inter-departmental coordination were critical in minimizing damage and ensuring safety, even as property losses were significant.
