New Delhi, April 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that expanding women’s participation in decision-making is central to India’s future, as he highlighted the growing national debate around women’s representation and the potential of the Nari Shakti Vandan initiative.
Addressing the Nari Shakti Vandan Sammelan at Vigyan Bhawan, the Prime Minister said the increasing public discourse on the issue reflects the strength of Indian democracy and signals a positive shift toward greater inclusion.
He said that women across the country have become more vocal in recent days, contributing to an extensive national conversation. He added that the initiative would give “new wings” to the aspirations of women and strengthen their role in shaping the country’s future.

Recalling the role of women in India’s history, Modi pointed to their contributions during the Independence movement and in the decisions of the Constituent Assembly. He also highlighted the leadership roles held by women after Independence, noting their presence in positions such as President and Prime Minister, and their impact in shaping national institutions.
The Prime Minister said that more than 14 lakh women are currently engaged in local governance across the country, reflecting their growing participation at the grassroots level. He cited studies indicating that increased involvement of women in decision-making processes leads to greater sensitivity in governance, particularly in sectors such as water, education, health and nutrition.
Referring to government initiatives, he said programmes like the Jal Jeevan Mission have demonstrated the positive outcomes of women’s participation at the panchayat level. He emphasised that such involvement has contributed to more focused and effective implementation in key development sectors.
Linking the initiative to the broader vision of a developed India, Modi said the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam would open new opportunities for women by easing their transition from local governance roles to legislative positions, including Parliament.
He also outlined several government schemes aimed at supporting women at different stages of life, including Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, Mission Indradhanush, Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, among others.
Calling for political consensus, the Prime Minister urged Members of Parliament to take decisions in the interest of women and ensure that discussions around the initiative reach every village. He stressed the need to use personal outreach, social media and other communication platforms to spread awareness among women across the country.
He said collective commitment to ensuring women’s rights and participation in governance would serve as a foundation for the country’s future growth.
