At BRICS Summit, PM Modi Calls for Ethical AI and Stronger Global Governance

Brasilia, July 7 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on BRICS nations to jointly promote the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), emphasizing the importance of balancing innovation with ethical governance. His remarks came during the Outreach Session on Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs, and Artificial Intelligence at the 17th BRICS Summit.

Highlighting India’s approach of β€˜AI for All’, PM Modi stressed that Artificial Intelligence must serve to enhance human values and capabilities. β€œWe in India believe in AI as a tool to enhance human values and capabilities,” he said, adding that the country is already applying AI across multiple sectors with inclusivity at its core.

According to Dammu Ravi, Secretary (Economic Relations), Ministry of External Affairs, the Prime Minister called for an inclusive AI framework within BRICS, underpinned by both innovation and safeguards.

The session also featured remarks from United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who warned that AI governance must not become β€œa club of the few.” He insisted that developing nations must have a real say in global AI discussions. β€œWe cannot govern AI effectively, and fairly, without confronting deeper, structural imbalances in our global system,” Guterres said, pointing to the need for reform in institutions like the UN Security Council and international financial bodies.

PM Modi reiterated India’s support for a multipolar world and BRICS’ role in shaping it. He described diversity and multipolarity as core strengths of the bloc.

As part of India’s proposals during the session, Modi suggested the establishment of a science and research repository by Global South nations within BRICS to enhance the resilience of critical mineral supply chains. He also underscored the need for BRICS to collaborate on frameworks for responsible AI usage.

India is scheduled to assume the BRICS chairmanship in 2026 and will host the AI Impact Summit. PM Modi extended an invitation to all BRICS nations to participate in the upcoming summit.
