In observance of World Population Month, the Directorate of Health Services, in collaboration with the UT Health Mission, organized a ‘Pariwar Vikas Mela’ at the Community Hall in Chouldhari under the jurisdiction of PHC Chouldhari today. The event aimed to raise awareness on reproductive health, family planning, and key social health concerns.
Dr. Suja Antony, Director of Health Services, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, attended the event as the chief guest and emphasized the significance of appropriate age for marriage. She urged the community to stay informed about the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act and highlighted the importance of spreading awareness regarding the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act, especially among school-going children.
In his address, Dr. H.M. Siddaraju, Deputy Director (Family Welfare), spotlighted the national slogan “Maa Banne Ki Umar Wahi, Jab Tan Aur Man Ki Tayyari Sahi” (Motherhood at the right age, when both body and mind are ready), underlining the importance of planned parenthood and healthy reproductive decisions.
Demonstrations on various family planning methods were conducted for the public, along with guidance on balanced nutrition. The session also included displays of locally available, cost-effective vegetables and fruits beneficial for women and children. Informative posters on family planning techniques and welfare schemes were also put up at the venue.
Earlier in the day, Dr. Smita Narayan, Medical Officer (Homeopathy), PHC Chouldhari, delivered the welcome address, setting the tone for the day’s activities.
Adding an interactive element to the programme, a quiz competition was held for Anganwadi Workers, who showcased their knowledge on health topics and were rewarded with cash prizes. To reinforce the messaging through creative expression, intern doctors from PHC Chouldhari staged a skit that addressed the importance of spacing between pregnancies and the numerous advantages of maintaining a small family.
The initiative aimed not only to promote awareness on reproductive health but also to empower local health workers and the public with accurate information on government-supported health and family welfare programs.
The Directorate of Health Services reaffirmed its commitment to educating the public on health and population issues and encouraged community participation to ensure that every family has access to informed reproductive choices.
