Sri Vijaya Puram, May 22: Social worker P. Abdul Basheer was honoured with the “Best Social Activist – A&N Islands” award during an achievement programme organised by AWPL at Mansha Hotel on May 9 in recognition of his work towards the welfare and empowerment of differently-abled persons in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The award was presented for his contribution to social welfare initiatives focusing on education, healthcare, empowerment and self-reliance among differently-abled and underprivileged individuals in the Islands.
Abdul Basheer has been associated with several community-oriented activities through Nai Manzil, an organisation involved in social support initiatives for differently-abled persons and economically weaker sections.
According to organisers, his efforts have centred on improving accessibility to educational support, healthcare assistance and livelihood-oriented programmes aimed at encouraging independence and social inclusion among beneficiaries.
The programme held at Mansha Hotel witnessed participation from guests, organisers and attendees who acknowledged his contribution to humanitarian and community service activities in the Islands.
Speakers during the event appreciated his continued engagement in welfare initiatives and highlighted the role of social organisations and activists in supporting vulnerable sections of society.
Abdul Basheer’s work through Nai Manzil has drawn attention in recent years for initiatives linked to assistance and support for differently-abled persons, particularly in areas related to empowerment and social participation.
Organisers stated that the award was intended to recognise individuals who have demonstrated consistent commitment towards public welfare and social service within the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The recognition also reflects increasing attention towards community-based initiatives supporting differently-abled individuals and promoting inclusive development in the Islands.
Attendees at the programme extended congratulations and conveyed their best wishes for his continued efforts in social service and humanitarian work.
Social welfare initiatives in the Islands are often carried out through collaboration between community groups, volunteers and non-governmental organisations working in areas including healthcare support, education, skill development and rehabilitation.
Programmes recognising grassroots social workers and activists are seen as encouraging wider public participation in welfare activities and community engagement.
The event formed part of an achievement programme organised by AWPL, where individuals associated with different fields of contribution and service were acknowledged.
