Youth Take to Streets for Open Road Race Promoting Fitness and Awareness

The Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, organized an energetic “Open Road Race” under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan to promote fitness and discourage substance abuse among youth. The event, which began at the Netaji Stadium Sports Complex, drew more than 200 participants from schools, colleges, and local organizations, turning the morning streets into a celebration of athletic spirit and social awareness.

The 10-kilometre category for men started from Netaji Stadium and extended to Megapode Chowk, while the 5-kilometre category for women covered the stretch from the Stadium to the Marine Research Laboratory, both culminating back at the starting point. The event aimed to motivate the younger generation to embrace healthy living and steer away from drug-related habits through the transformative power of sports.

The race was flagged off by Lt. Sachin Parashar and attended by Director (Education and Sports) Vikram Singh, who presided as chief guest. Addressing participants, officials underlined that initiatives like these not only encourage youth participation in sports but also contribute to the nationwide campaign for a drug-free India.

The enthusiasm among participants reflected the growing popularity of community sports events across the islands. The streets came alive with cheering spectators, family members, and volunteers who supported the runners throughout the course. Many young participants, some competing for the first time, completed the race with determination and pride.

In the women’s 5-kilometre category, Arpita Toppo from GSSS Rangachang secured first place, followed by Amrika Das from Chouldari in second and Sanjana Bai from SSS Bathubasti in third. Aashwan Phan from SSS Rangachang and Rinki Kumari from KV-1 received consolation awards. In the men’s 10-kilometre category, Deva from Invent Public School took first place, followed by Chella Laxmi Naidu from JNRM College and Abhishek from SSS Prothrapur. Ganesh Kumar from SSS Tushnabad and Subham from SSS Prothrapur received consolation prizes.

Winners were honoured with gold, silver, and bronze medals, along with certificates recognizing their achievements. The awards ceremony was attended by officials from the Sports Department and other invited guests, who congratulated participants for their effort and sportsmanship.

The Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs emphasized that such events are key to promoting the “Fit India” vision while spreading the message of a drug-free lifestyle. Sports, officials noted, serve as a powerful alternative that builds discipline, teamwork, and resilience among the youth.

The department has also announced plans to continue the momentum with a larger “Marathon” event scheduled for late November or December. The upcoming marathon will feature two starting points, North Bay and Netaji Stadium, and will include participation from celebrities from the mainland. This initiative aims to further boost enthusiasm for fitness and expand public engagement in sports across the islands.

With a growing number of youth turning toward athletics, the administration hopes to channel this energy into sustained sports programs and anti-drug awareness campaigns. The event’s success underscored that collective participation and public support remain crucial in building a healthier, more vibrant, and drug-free Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
