Netflix Partners with Tourism Ministry to Showcase India

Collaboration aims to promote Indian destinations, including Andaman Islands, through streaming originals

Date:

In a first-of-its-kind collaboration in South Asia, the Ministry of Tourism (MoT) has partnered with global streaming giant Netflix to showcase and promote India’s cultural and natural diversity. The initiative will integrate iconic Indian destinations into Netflix’s original storylines, highlighting the country’s tourism potential to a global audience.

Ms V. Vidyavathi, Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, described the partnership as a step towards β€œshowcasing India’s cultural richness and diversity” to viewers worldwide. The collaboration will see locations like the lush Nilgiri forests in The Elephant Whisperers, the vibrant fields of Punjab in Amar Singh Chamkila, and the Andaman Islands in Kaala Paani feature prominently in streaming narratives. Other destinations highlighted include Rajasthan, Kalimpong, and various cities across India.

Monika Shergill, Vice President of Content at Netflix India, said the partnership celebrates India’s β€œdiversity, its people, and its voices” while creating opportunities for local talent and communities to thrive. Netflix has already filmed in over 100 cities across 23 states, marking the most extensive filming footprint of any international streaming platform in India.

The collaboration also shines a spotlight on Netflix productions gaining international recognition. Amar Singh Chamkila, starring Diljit Dosanjh, has earned him a nomination for Best Actor in a Lead Role at the International Emmy Awards. The biopic traces Chamkila’s journey from a Dalit labourer to a folk music icon, delving into social themes of caste, desire, and conservatism, before his unsolved assassination in 1988.

This MoT-Netflix partnership marks Netflix’s first collaboration with a tourism governing body in South Asia, following similar initiatives with countries including France, Indonesia, Korea, Thailand, Spain, Brazil, and Greece. For India, the initiative aims to blend storytelling with tourism promotion, potentially inspiring viewers to explore the country’s diverse landscapes, from the remote Andaman Islands to the bustling streets of Rajasthan.

With streaming platforms becoming a powerful medium for cultural storytelling, this collaboration positions India’s destinations as global attractions while celebrating the nation’s rich narratives and cinematic talent.
