The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) RRC Andaman team conducted a comprehensive disaster response and mobilization drill at Jirkatang Check Post on January 29, aimed at strengthening rapid response capabilities and improving coordination with local authorities during emergencies.
The exercise, overseen by Assistant Commandant Sridhar R., included a Collapsed Structure Search and Rescue (CSSR) simulation, designed to replicate real-life disaster scenarios involving trapped victims in compromised or collapsed structures. CSSR is a critical aspect of disaster preparedness, allowing teams to efficiently locate and extract individuals under high-risk conditions.
Acting on instructions from 4BN NDRF, Arakkonam, the RRC ANI team was led by Inspector Kunal Kaushik and deployed a contingent of 30 rescuers. The team was fully equipped with specialized gear for flood rescue, CSSR, medical first aid, and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) response. NDRF personnel are trained to manage a variety of disaster situations, including earthquakes, floods, landslides, and CBRN emergencies.
During the drill, the team simulated a complete operational response as in an actual emergency. Upon reaching the site, the unit established communication with 4BN NDRF Headquarters using both satellite phones and high-frequency radio sets. A detailed, point-by-point update on the exercise’s progress was transmitted to the command center, ensuring continuous monitoring and assessment of operational efficiency.
The exercise emphasized prompt response times, adherence to safety protocols, and efficient coordination among team members and local authorities. By conducting this drill, the NDRF aims to maintain high readiness levels, enabling rapid deployment and effective disaster management in the Andaman region.
The Jirkatang Check Post exercise is part of ongoing efforts by the NDRF to test and enhance operational preparedness, including the deployment of advanced rescue techniques and equipment under realistic conditions. The drill also provided practical experience in managing communication challenges and logistical coordination during emergencies.
Officials stated that such mobilization exercises are essential to ensuring that teams are capable of swift and effective action during disasters. Regular drills are conducted across different regions to keep personnel updated on evolving disaster response strategies and maintain proficiency in complex rescue operations.
The NDRF RRC Andaman’s focus on combined disaster readiness, including CSSR, flood operations, and CBRN response, demonstrates a multi-faceted approach to safeguarding communities and minimizing casualties during unforeseen emergencies.
