Sri Vijaya Puram, May 14: The southwest monsoon is likely to advance into the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and surrounding Andaman Sea region by the end of this week, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The weather development is being closely monitored as it marks the expected onset of the annual monsoon season over the island region. Officials said atmospheric conditions over the Bay of Bengal are currently becoming favourable for the advancement of the monsoon.
The update comes amid an active low-pressure area prevailing over the southwest Bay of Bengal, which is expected to intensify further within the next 48 hours. Meteorologists stated that the system is contributing to increased moisture flow and changing weather conditions across parts of the region.

According to weather officials, the evolving system may also lead to enhanced cloud activity, rainfall and stronger winds over sections of the Andaman Sea in the coming days.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) stated that the low-pressure system is likely to influence weather patterns across coastal areas of southern India as well as adjoining sea regions. While heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for several delta districts of Tamil Nadu, meteorologists are also keeping close watch on monsoon progression towards the islands.
The arrival of the southwest monsoon over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is considered an important indicator in the overall advancement of the monsoon across the Indian subcontinent. The system typically reaches the islands before gradually progressing towards mainland India.
Weather officials said sea conditions may also witness increased wind activity due to the strengthening weather system. Fishing operations and coastal movement are expected to remain under observation as authorities monitor further developments over the Bay of Bengal.
The IMD is expected to issue additional updates regarding rainfall activity, wind conditions and monsoon advancement over the islands in the coming days based on the movement and intensity of the low-pressure area.
Cloudy skies and intermittent rainfall activity are likely to increase gradually across parts of the island region as the monsoon system approaches.
