Monsoon Hits Andaman, IMD Tracks Bay of Bengal Low-Pressure System

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, May 13, 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has officially confirmed the early arrival of the southwest monsoon over parts of the south Bay of Bengal, south Andaman Sea, Nicobar Islands, and north Andaman Sea as of May 13, 2025. This marks the earliest onset of the monsoon in the past seven years, with the seasonal rains advancing more rapidly than usual.

According to the IMD’s latest update, the monsoon is expected to reach Kerala by May 27, several days ahead of its typical onset of June 1. Experts have attributed this early arrival to favorable atmospheric conditions, including strengthened westerly winds in the lower atmosphere and enhanced easterly winds in the upper atmosphere.

As the monsoon continues its march across the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are expected to experience intensified rainfall. The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy showers in the region over the next few days, with gusty winds likely to affect local maritime and air traffic.

Heavy rainfall is forecast to continue through the week, especially over the Nicobar Islands, with winds reaching speeds of up to 60 km/h. The IMD has issued yellow alerts for multiple districts across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, cautioning residents against potential flash floods and landslides, particularly in the hilly and coastal areas.

The IMD has also noted a developing cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, which could evolve into a low-pressure system by mid-May. This system is expected to form near the east-central Bay of Bengal between May 16 and May 22, and authorities are closely monitoring it for any possible intensification.

Should the system strengthen, there is a potential for it to further impact the monsoon’s progression and cause localized disturbances in both the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and surrounding areas. The IMD has urged residents of the islands and coastal regions of the Bay of Bengal to remain vigilant and adhere to official weather advisories.

With the early onset of monsoon rains, residents of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are advised to take necessary precautions to avoid the impact of heavy rainfall, including flooding, strong winds, and possible landslides. Authorities have been advised to monitor the situation closely, especially in the aftermath of heavy rains.
