Meta Switches Off End-to-End Encrypted Chats on Instagram Worldwide

Date:

Summary

Meta has officially discontinued end-to-end encrypted direct messages on Instagram globally, reversing its earlier push for privacy-focused messaging. The company said users with existing encrypted chats are being notified to save important media and conversations before the feature is fully removed.

New Delhi, May 9: Meta has officially discontinued end-to-end encrypted direct messages on Instagram globally, rolling back one of its key privacy-focused features amid ongoing debates over online safety and platform accountability.

The company confirmed that users with existing encrypted chats are receiving in-app notifications asking them to download important messages, photos, videos and voice notes before the feature is fully disabled.

The move marks a significant shift in Meta’s messaging strategy, especially after the company had previously described private and encrypted communication as “the future of communication” across its platforms.

End-to-end encryption, commonly known as E2EE, ensures that only the sender and receiver can read messages exchanged on a platform. Under such systems, even the service provider cannot access the contents of chats.

With the removal of the feature from Instagram, Meta will now retain the ability to access message content when required, including text messages, media files and voice notes.

Instagram, however, will continue using standard encryption methods similar to those used by services such as email platforms and several mainstream online applications. While standard encryption secures messages during transmission between devices and servers, it still allows the platform itself to access the content if necessary.

Meta had spent several years gradually expanding encrypted messaging services across its ecosystem, including Facebook Messenger and Instagram. Facebook Messenger eventually introduced default end-to-end encryption for personal chats, but Instagram’s encrypted messaging feature remained optional and was never widely adopted by users.

According to multiple reports, Meta decided to discontinue the Instagram feature after internal assessments found that only a limited number of users were actively enabling encrypted chats.

However, privacy advocates criticised the decision, arguing that optional privacy tools often see lower adoption because many users are either unaware of the feature or unwilling to manually activate additional security settings.

Critics also warned that removing end-to-end encryption weakens user privacy protections at a time when concerns over data access, surveillance and online security continue to grow globally.

At the same time, child safety organisations welcomed the rollback of encrypted messaging on Instagram.

The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) and similar groups have long argued that encrypted chats can make it significantly harder for law enforcement agencies and platforms to detect harmful activity, including online child exploitation and abuse.

The debate over encryption has increasingly become a global issue, with technology companies facing pressure from both privacy campaigners and governments seeking stronger monitoring mechanisms for online platforms.

Meanwhile, concerns over the broader impact of social media usage on children and teenagers continue to rise.

A recent study involving more than 8,000 children between the ages of 10 and 14 found that spending over 30 minutes daily on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat may gradually reduce concentration levels among young users.

The study tracked children’s social media habits over several years and found that average screen time increased from around 30 minutes per day at age nine to nearly two-and-a-half hours daily by the age of 13.

The latest decision by Meta is expected to reignite global discussions over the balance between digital privacy, user safety and platform responsibility in the evolving social media landscape.
