On the solemn occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, President Droupadi Murmu and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh paid heartfelt tributes to the Indian soldiers who laid down their lives during the 1999 Kargil War. The leaders reaffirmed the nation’s collective gratitude for the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of the armed forces.
In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), President Murmu saluted the fallen soldiers, describing their valour and determination as a “symbol of extraordinary courage” that will forever inspire the nation. “This day stands as a symbol of the extraordinary valour, courage, and unwavering determination of our troops,” she wrote, adding that their dedication remains a beacon of patriotism. “Jai Hind! Jai Bharat!” she concluded.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh echoed similar sentiments, recalling the soldiers’ courage in defending India’s honour in some of the most hostile and treacherous terrains. “Their supreme sacrifice is a timeless reminder of the unwavering resolve of our Armed Forces. India shall remain forever indebted to their service,” the Defence Minister stated on X.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also joined in paying homage. He acknowledged the valour of the martyrs, extending greetings to the Armed Forces, veterans, and citizens. “Their unflinching courage and valour will forever inspire generations,” he wrote.
Kargil Vijay Diwas, observed every year on July 26, marks India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1999 Kargil conflict. The war, which took place in the Northern Kargil district of Ladakh, saw Indian troops successfully recapturing high-altitude posts that had been occupied by Pakistani forces.
While Pakistan initially denied its involvement, attributing the intrusion to Kashmiri militants, subsequent evidence, including recovered documents, prisoner testimonies, and admissions by top Pakistani leaders, confirmed the direct role of the Pakistani military, particularly the paramilitary forces under General Ashraf Rashid.
The day is commemorated with nationwide events and ceremonies honouring the bravery of Indian soldiers. From the national capital to remote villages, citizens gather to pay homage to those who sacrificed their lives in service to the country.
