Sri Vijaya Puram | Police are examining whether alleged harassment played a role in the death by suicide of a first-year Political Science student of Jawaharlal Nehru Rajkeeya Mahavidyalaya (JNRM). The student, identified as Sonali from Paschim Sagar in Diglipur, was found dead in her hostel room on Friday, 14 November. She had reportedly been moved to a new hostel room just a day before the incident, college sources said.
According to police sources, investigators are looking into reports that the student may have been facing harassment linked to a personal relationship. Individuals familiar with the matter said the student had been under emotional distress in the days leading up to the incident, and police are verifying whether this was connected to any dispute or pressure from those known to her.
Officials said call detail records, hostel entry logs, and statements from students and hostel staff are being collected to reconstruct the sequence of events. “The harassment angle is being closely examined. All possibilities remain open at this stage,” a senior police officer told The Wave Andaman.
The student’s death has triggered concern across campus, with many urging the college administration to strengthen mental-health support and grievance-redressal mechanisms in hostels. Student representatives said they have asked for expanded counselling services and closer supervision in hostel blocks as the institution grapples with the tragedy.
